<br />              BUJUMBURA (Reuters) - Burundian 
President Pierre Nkurunziza on Sunday made his first public appearance 
in the capital Bujumbura since an attempted coup last week failed to 
oust him, warning of a threat posed by Islamist militants from Somalia.<br />

              The east African nation was plunged into crisis after Nkurunziza said he was seeking a third term of office. </div>
<div id="yui_3_16_0_1_1431943823711_1142">
              Critics said the move would be unconstitutional, and there
 have been almost daily protests since Nkurunziza's announcement, 
stirring memories of an ethnically driven civil war that ended a decade 
ago.</div>
At a news conference, Nkurunziza, who has not 
been seen in the capital for days, did not address the crisis in his 
country but said he was "very preoccupied" by the threat posed by the al
 Qaeda-linked militant group al Shabaab.<br />
              "We take seriously the threat of al Shabaab," said Nkurunziza.<br />

He did not elaborate, but Burundi contributes 
forces to an African Union peacekeeping mission battling al Shabaab in 
Somalia. In recent years, the group has attacked Kenya and Uganda, which
 also provide troops.<br />
              A spokesman for the Islamist 
group said Nkurunziza's remarks were "dumbfounding" and said the 
problems in Burundi were "clearly domestic."<br />
              "We 
think that this is an attempt by him to appease his people, who are 
standing in the streets protesting against his dictatorship, or to 
divert the world's attention from him while he possibly prepares his 
mass revenge," Sheikh Ali Mahamud Rage said in a statement to Reuters.<br />

A leader of a group of Burundian civil society groups, 
Vital Nshimirimana, said demonstrations against Nkurunziza's third term 
bid, which had largely come to a halt in recent days, would resume on 
Monday.<br />
              "We ask the international community to 
follow closely the situation in Burundi in order to stop the harsh 
reprisal against protesters, civil society activists and opposition 
leaders," Nshimirimana said in a statement.<br />

OLD WOUNDS<br />
              Until the coup 
attempt, protests had occurred almost daily in the outskirts of 
Bujumbura. Protesters hurled rocks while police fired tear gas, water 
cannon and were also seen firing guns at the protesters. <br />
        
      Diplomats say the longer unrest continues the more chance that a 
conflict, which up until now has been largely a struggle for power, 
reopens old wounds in a region with a history of ethnic killing.<br />
 
             More than 105,000 people have fled to neighboring states, 
including next-door Rwanda, with the same ethnic mix as Burundi and 
which was torn apart by a genocide in 1994 that killed 800,000 mostly 
Tutsis and moderate Hutus.<br />
              At the Gashora camp in 
Rwanda, Hakizimana Leonidas, a farmer who said he was a Tutsi, said he 
fled Burundi a day after last week's coup attempt.<br />
              
"I want to see Burundi as a peaceful country but the problem is that 
those who could be protecting us are the ones causing chaos," said 
Leonidas, 46.<br />

The constitution and a peace deal that ended the civil war both specify a
 two-term presidential limit. But Nkurunziza is seeking a third term 
anyway, relying on a court ruling that his first term does not count 
because he was appointed by parliament, not elected. His opponents and 
some donors have questioned the court's impartiality.</div>

              The heavy-handed response of the police to demonstrations 
in recent weeks has drawn stern rebukes from Western donors, who have 
urged the president not to run again, while the African Union condemned 
any attempt to seize power through violence.</div>

              Pope Francis called for an end to the violence in Burundi during prayers held at St Peter's Square in the Vatican.</div>
<div id="yui_3_16_0_1_1431943823711_1134">
              Asking for a prayer for the people of Burundi, he said: 
"May the Lord help them to escape from violence and act responsibly for 
the good of the country."</div>

           In March, the Catholic church in Burundi, which represents 
more than two-thirds of the population, came out against the president

Bujumbura (Burundi) (AFP) - Rival factions of Burundi's army fought intense battles Thursday for control of the capital, a day after a top general launched a coup to oust the president of the central African nation Pierre Nkurunziza.</div>

<span style="font-size: 15.0000009536743px; line-height: 24.0000019073486px;"><br />The president himself was in neighbouring Tanzania when the coup was launched and remains in a secret location in Dar es Salaam, Tanzanian officials said.</span>The clashes were centred around the state television and radio complex, with broadcasts to the nation halted, before resuming after an attack was repulsed.</div>

AFP reporters said the crackle of automatic weapons fire and the thump of explosions could be heard throughout the night and intensified around dawn. After a brief lull and after state radio broadcast a message from Nkurunziza, a major attack was launched by pro-coup troops, which was fought off.</div>

"We had stopped transmitting during the attack. Now the fighting has stopped we can resume. It is still loyalist soldiers who are in control," the station's director Jerome Nzokirantevye said in a broadcast.</div>

The streets were largely deserted by civilians as sporadic clashes could be heard in other parts of the city, while plumes of smoke were seen on the city skyline.</div>

"We control virtually the entire city. The soldiers who are being deployed are on our side," coup spokesman Venon Ndabaneze told AFP.</div>

Similar claims, however, were made by troops loyal to the president, and it remained unclear which side had the upper hand.</div>

Burundi's armed forces chief, a supporter of the president, had used national radio to declare that the coup, launched by former intelligence chief Godefroid Niyombare, had failed.</div>

Supporters of the president also carried out attacks against independent media broadcasters in the capital, with the influential African Public Radio station ablaze after being hit by a rocket.</div>

More than 25 people have been killed and scores wounded since late April, when Burundi's ruling CNDD-FDD party -- which has been accused of intimidating the opposition and arming its own militia -- nominated Nkurunziza to stand for re-election in June 26 polls.</div>

It remains unclear, however, how many have died since the launch of the coup.</div>

Nkurunziza was meanwhile stuck in neighbouring Tanzania, after his attempt to return home after the coup was announced and was blocked by his opponents who seized the airport and ordered the borders to be shut.</div>

"He is in Dar es Salaam, we cannot tell you where. We cannot bring him to the same hotel for security reasons," a senior Tanzanian presidential security official told AFP, confirming Nkurunziza was still in the country.</div>

An AFP correspondent confirmed that the airport in the Burundian capital had been in the hands of pro-coup forces, although there were conflicting claims over who controlled it on Thursday.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.1em;">
The attempted coup has sparked international alarm, with Washington urging Burundians to "lay down arms, end the violence and show restraint".</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.1em;">
The African Union Thursday condemned the violence, calling all "parties to peacefully resolve the crisis."</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.1em;">
Those calls were echoed by the European Union which warned it was "essential the situation does not spin out of control".</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.1em;">
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also made an urgent appeal for calm, while the Security Council said it would hold an emergency meeting on the situation on Thursday.</div>

In his message announcing the coup, Niyombare signalled he did not want to take power himself, vowing to form a "committee for the restoration of national harmony" and work for "the resumption of the electoral process in a peaceful and fair environment."</div>

Niyombare is a highly respected figure who was sacked from his intelligence post in February after he opposed Nkurunziza's attempt to prolong his 10-year rule.</div>

Segun described the experience of some of "the Chibok girls," as they have come to be known, who escaped in the first couple of days of their abductions. Some got away as they were being transported in open trucks by grabbing the branches of low hanging trees.</div>

Instead of being admired for their bravery, some of those "who had escaped were being called Boko Haram wives," said Segun. After speaking to one of the girls, Segun "got the sense from her that it deeply, deeply shamed her and her companions ... they were being discriminated against because of close contact with Boko Haram and stigmatized," Segun said.</div>
